Abstract
After ten years of participation in the ISAF mission, Italy is preparing to gradually disengage from the Afghan theater, along with other NATO nations. Our civil-military apparatus achieved encouraging results in terms of material and social reconstruction of the assigned area, the Regional Command West, particularly in the province of Herat. The challenges for the future will concern the security and stability of the area, that must be thoroughly invigorated in spite of the important results achieved, and the work still to be done in order to reap the fruits of the Italian ten-year long commitment. The analysis will focus on identifying strategic sectors where Italy has invested and the efforts still needed to achieve long-term goals. The paper will then give a deep look also into non-material gains, equally strategic for our country and how our country credibility has been affected by the participation in ISAF. Finally the analysis will try to give some hints towards the direction of Italy’s strategic doctrine to maintain a role prominent in the global scenario.
